What to Expect From Your Dog Photography Session: Top 10 FAQs

If you’ve been thinking about booking a dog photography session but aren’t quite sure what to expect - you’re not alone. I’m asked a lot of the same questions by lovely dog owners just like you, whether they’re unsure about leads, curious about pricing, or worried their dog might not “behave.” That’s why I’ve pulled together the top 10 most frequently asked questions to help put your mind at ease and show you exactly how relaxed, dog-led, and joy-filled the experience really is. Let’s dive in.

1. What makes your dog photography ethical?

I believe the best images come from trust, not pressure. My sessions are completely dog-led — no forced poses, we will always keep stress and pressure to a minimum throughout a session. Your dog’s comfort and wellbeing are always the top priority and we can create magic from the most simple of set up.

2. Where do your sessions take place?

I’m based on the Devon/Dorset border, but specialising in wild, natural locations I do not limit my session locations geographically. Sometimes travel is required for those perfect beaches, forests, and moorland spots. I’ll help you choose a setting that suits your dog’s personality, your own personal limitations on travelling distance, and gives us the most magical light and backdrop.

3. What if my dog can’t be off-lead?

No problem at all! Safety always comes first, most of the dogs I photograph stay on lead and I use a little post-production magic to remove it from the final images. I will often offer a thin show lead for clients to use, but only if their dog is able to offer a steady position.

I prefer to use a loop lead (often used to show spaniels and terriers), as this style can be gently tightened to ensure the dog can’t slip out but won’t tighten further in the same way that a slip lead would should the dog move. BUT if your dog is uncomfortable in this set up we can work with their standard collar and lead, this is not a problem and I can just as easily remove this with a bit of editing magic.

4. My dog is a bit shy / wild / doesn’t sit still… is that okay?

Absolutely. I work with all kinds of dogs - bouncy, sensitive, reactive, rescue, you name it. Sessions are relaxed, playful, and completely tailored to your dog’s pace and personality.

5. What’s included in a session?

Every session includes a pre-shoot consultation, a bespoke outdoor adventure in a handpicked location, and a fully guided experience tailored to your dog. After your shoot, you’ll be invited to a relaxed viewing appointment where you can choose from a carefully curated range of luxury artwork and digital collections.

Realistically, most clients invest between £500 and £2000 on their session and final artwork - but there’s no minimum product spend and no pressure to purchase. You’ll only ever invest in the images you truly love.

You can view my Portrait Collections on the Sessions page, and full product guides are available on request. Many clients come back time and again, not just for more photographs, but for the experience of celebrating their dog in such a meaningful way.

6. What should I bring to the session?

Once you’ve booked, I’ll send you a full prep guide. Essentials usually include a collar and lead, your dog’s favourite treats and/or toy, water, and if we’re heading to a particularly muddy spot a towel can be useful! For adventure sessions or dog sport events, I’ll tailor recommendations to suit.

7. Do you photograph other animals?

Yes! While dogs are my main muse, I’m happy to photograph other pets, especially if they suit the same outdoorsy or natural vibe. Just drop me a message and let’s chat.

8. Can I be in the photos too?

Absolutely! These sessions are just as much about your bond as they are about your dog. Whether it’s a candid cuddle, a windswept walk, or a quiet connection, I’ll guide you so everything feels relaxed and natural. No awkward posing, I promise.

9. How far in advance should I book?

To catch the best light and seasonal colour, I recommend booking 4–8 weeks in advance, especially in spring and autumn. If you have a specific date in mind, let me know as early as possible!

10. I’d love to book — what’s next?

Just head to my contact page and fill in the short form. I’ll be in touch within 48 hours to plan the perfect adventure session for you and your dog.
